Snuggled up against Florida's panhandle at the southernmost point of Alabama, is a cozy community renowned for its silky soft sand and warm, emerald-green waters. The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach area is referred to as Pleasure Island, and for good reason. Sand dunes rise and fall as gentle breezes sweep across them; bare footers meander alongside the water's edge as sand sifts slowly through their toes; and birdwatchers look skyward, in awe of gliding shorebirds.

Nearby, multi-story hotels and condominiums dot the landscape to accommodate the growth that continues to take place here. The town receives a steady source of tourist and traveler income, while sectors such as real estate, construction, health care, and education reap the benefits. Much like a tropical paradise, Gulf Shores & Orange Beach allows outdoorsy types to soak up year-round mild temperatures. Temperatures in the cooler part of the year average around 65 degrees; summertime is a bit warmer--registering about 87 degrees but it is never too warm to lounge on the beach, play golf or tennis, or go sightseeing out on the open water.

These communities are perfect for people who want to escape busy metro areas, but still reside close enough to big city conveniences and cultural opportunities. Local offerings, however, keep most residents from leaving except out of absolute necessity. Indeed, shopping in local centers such as Bayou Village featuring beach apparel and other unique items offers hours of purchasing pleasure. Arts and culture buffs find endless pleasure here and in nearby Mobile. Amateur theater companies, symphony concerts, and operas presented by University of South Alabama students, and numerous festivals add to Baldwin County's high cultural index.
